Bidwill Historical Note:

Bidwell is located 48 kilometers west of the Sydney central business district, falling under the local government area of the City of Blacktown, and is a part of the area known as Greater Western Sydney.

Bidwill was named after John Carne Bidwill (1815-1853) who was the botanist in charge at the Botanic Gardens. Prior to colonisation, Bidwill and the surrounding areas was home to the Darug people.

In the 1960s and 1970s Bidwill was dominated by the development of public housing and in recent times has been associated with many economic and social problems that have lead to an increase in crime and violence.

There is very little commercial activity in Bidwill as it primarily a residential area. It is close to suburbs St Mary’s and Mount Druitt that have larger shopping centres, banks and railway stations. There are service stations and supermarkets in the nearby Plumpton and Emerton.
