Balmain East Historical Note:
A small suburb in the inner west of Sydney, located just 3 kilometers from the central business district. It falls within the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt
Balmain East is on the eastern end of the Balmain Peninsula sharing it’s boundary with the suburb of Balmain to the west. It shares it’s postcode of 2041 with surrounding suburbs Birchgrove and Balmain
Originally Balmain East was part of a 550 acre grant given to Dr William Balmain, a colonial surgeon in 1800 by Governor John Hunter. The area was first settled in 1836 and by 1861 had been divided up into the populated eastern areas of Balmain and the less populated western area that extends to the gates of Callan Park.
Known to locals for decades as *East Balmain* was the small peninsula that jutted out from the main Balmian peninsula, covering the area from Darling Street to the area east of Hart Street and Balmain Bowling club.
