A suburb of northern Sydney located 12 kilometres north east of the Sydney central business district it falls under the local government area of Manly Council in the region known as the Northern Beaches. Balgowlah shares its 2093 postcode with neighbouring suburbs of North Balgowlah and Balgowlah Heights.
The Stockland Village Shopping centre was built on the site of the historic *Totem Shopping Centre* as the Totem centre was run down when it was demolished the Totem name was not continued but many long term locals still refer to it as *Totem*
Located 2 kilometres North is the closet local shopping centre Warringah Mall. There are still a few smaller shops within the suburb, some of them leftover remnants from the traditional *corner shop* days before the 1960’s. The area is well serviced and includes banks, restaurants, travel agents, hair dressers, hardware store, liquor store, delicatessen, florist, bakery, etc
