Park Orchards historical note
Park Orchards is a suburb of Melbourne located 23 km north-east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Manningham. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 3,822 inhabitants.
The Wurundjeri people occupied the territory prior to the European settlement. Settlers used the area for farming and orchards in the 1900s. A Clubhouse, “The chalet” was built in the suburb in 1929 with the Spanish style. Unfortunately, estate failed to attract enough buyers during the 1930s depression so they decided to use lands in order to plants pines trees. The Z special unit used The Chalet and the sport grounds close to during the WWII.
The suburb knew a residential boom during the post WWII period and saw the population increased really fast. The first post office opened in 1959 followed by a primary school in 1961. Finally, new owners purchased the Chalet in 2007 in order to open an aged care facility. But since 2015 the Chalet remains unused and neglected. Nowadays many facilities are located in the area including schools, transports, shops and sports clubs.
