According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 5,762 inhabitants. Frankston nicknames is “pines”. Its because of the Australian Defence Force of the area named “Pines Forest Estate”.
Sir Andrew Clarke purchased many acres in the region in 1853. He established his mansion in the suburb. In 1870 he proposed to established the “Clarke” Reserve in order to replace the Old Melbourne Cemetery. Finally, they choose Spring vale as a location. 1 million of pines were planted in this park. James Brown was the second, and the last, forest officer of the plantation, for 1920s until 1956. Unfortunately, fires burnt a large part of the plantation in 1955. The Housing Commission used the fresh empty lands to build residential housing on it.
Back between 1970 and 1980 the suburb had a bad reputation for high crimes. Car theft, assault and drug related crimes were commons in this area. To change this reputation, many drugs control and speed limits were established on the Monterey Boulevard, known to be a crimes road. Furthermore, many state-run houses were sold as private in 1990s.
Pines remains to be an important flora and fauna reserve in the Mornington Peninsula. You can observe small mammas, reptiles and amphibians during your walks here. Further more than 100 bird species have been located in this reserve. In term of flora, native orchids are beautiful and many wildflowers grow in the forest.
The town is also a house to various clubs such as footie or swimming clubs. The Rotary club established one house here in 1960.
