Burwood historical note
Burwood is a suburb of Melbourne located 14 km east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the Cities of Monash and Whitehorse. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 15,019 inhabitants.
The first post office opened in 1879. The town name was Norwood at first but changed to became Burwood in the impulsion of Si James Palmer who built his house in 1852. Back in 1904 there was just 600 inhabitants, a post office, a bank and two hotels in the suburb. Farms and market gardens surrounded the rest of the area.
The suburb followed the expansion of Melbourne during the post-WWII period. Lot of community facilities were built in the area. For example, you can find the Allambie reception centre or the Burwood boy’s home. There is also facilities for people with physical disabilities: The Princess Elizabeth Kindergarten for the Deaf or The Royal Victorian Institute of the Blind (known as Vision Australia). Finally, the Burwood Skyline was the first drive-in theatre in Australia. The theatre has a capacity of 743 cars nowadays.
Burwood is the location of the Deakin University and numerous of private and public schools for all the levels. Two retirement houses are in the area of Burwood.
