Beaumaris historical note
Beaumaris is a bayside suburb of Melbourne located 20 km south-east from the central district of the city. The area it’s under the local government of the City of Bayside. According to the 2016 census the suburb had a population of 12,829 inhabitants.
Indigenous people of Kulin nation occupied the region in the first place until the white settlement. One of the first white settlers James Bickford Moysey. He called the suburb in reference of the welsh town of Beumaris called “Beaux Marais” by the French builders. You can literally traduce by “beautiful marshes”.
The first post office opened in 1868 and the suburb known a long period of slow development. In 1889 the construction of the Great Southern Hotel raised the reputation of the area. It was renamed “Beaumaris Hotel” in 1920. The structure of the building survived during the bushfires of 1944. Finally, in 2014 the hotel was rebuilt into 58 apartments.
Few sea baths were built in 1902 but a storm destroyed the baths in 1934. In 1939, Dunlop Rubber Company built a large factory on the lands of Beaumaris near to Cromer Street. Unfortunately, a huge part of the suburb burnt during the 1944 bushfires. The suburb was rebuilt in 1960.
